Are the dog days really over?

I don't know what the weather is like where you are right now but our little patch of Norfolk is grey, cool and damp this Bank Holiday Monday morning. At the moment it seems as if the dog days are over but the Summer may still have a few surprises up her sleeve yet.

I knew this Summer break was going to be hectic and I also knew we weren't going to have a holiday and both acknowledgements had an impact on my choice of Summer Reads. My first choice was A Summer To Remember by Victoria Connelly. I freely admit I have a weakness for Victoria's writing because she's a local girl and this particular novel is set in the landscape local to me and was packed with familiar landmarks and place names. I could even imagine the Old Mill where lovely Nina Elliot spends her literally life changing summer as the mill in the village where I used to live. This perfect summer read offered comfort in the familiar and was a fabulous contrast to my second choice.

The Longest Holiday by Paige Toon offered me the perfect 'virtual holiday' and satisfied my wander lust courtesy of the vivid and evocative descriptions of colourful Key West and steamy Miami. The novel centers around unlucky in love (understatement of the year), Laura, who finds her life thrown into utter turmoil after a shocking discovery at home sends her fleeing to the other side of the world, but in search of what? No spoilers here, read it for yourself! Chances are you already have.

My Summer Reads this year couldn't have been more different but they were both the perfect bedtime distraction. Needless to say I would strongly recommend reading both, assuming you haven't already, and turning up the heat at the end of Summer 2014.
