My Writing Life with... Elle Field

Today I'm delighted to welcome the thoroughly fabulous and hugely talented Elle Field to the blog as she shares with us the details of her writing habits in My Writing Life.

My Writing Life

I’m lucky that I now spend about half my year writing my books full-time and the other half of the year working, which means I no longer have to do the magical juggling act of balancing a day job with writing a novel and still having some sort of social life.

When I did have a full-time day job though, I would make the most of my lunch hour and hide myself away in the library which was, luckily, opposite work. In previous jobs where I had a longer train journey, I’d make the most of that commute (space permitting – it’s pretty impossible to write when you’re pressed up against several strangers). I’m not a morning person so setting the alarm an hour earlier to write was never an option for me!

I’m currently working on my fourth book, the final book in the Arielle Lockley series, which is a chicklit series set in London and the New Forest that is told from Arielle’s first-person perspective. Kept, the first book in the series,  is almost a cautionary tale of what it’s really like to be a kept woman living the high life... and then what happens when it all goes wrong.

I first started writing chicklit when I was at university as an escape from all the very dry and heavy political texts that I had to read for my degree, though I am dipping in and out of writing a dystopian YA novel at the moment, and I’d also really love to write a crime thriller book. For me it’s all about where the story takes me – genre doesn’t come into it.

My aspirations...

My next step as a writer is to get my books out there beyond Amazon – I can’t wait for the day that I see my books in WHSmith at the airport or displayed in Waterstones, though my secret aspiration is to have my very own book poster on the Tube. Even though I’ve had some success already – I’ve made it to #1 in the Amazon best sellers chart and was longlisted for an award – there’s something to me that screams that you’ve made it when you have your own ad campaign on the Tube!

If you want to be a writer there will be sacrifices involved – whether that’s time, money, sleep or a social life – if you overcome those and don’t give up, then you’re already halfway there to making it. Good luck!
