Today I am delighted to welcome Morton Gray back to the blog to tell us all about her latest book, The Truth Lies Buried, and the inspiration behind it.
Here's the blurb to set the scene...
When Jenny Simpson returns to the seaside town of Borteen,
her childhood home, it’s for a less than happy reason. But it’s also a chance
for her to start again.
A new job leads to her working for Carver Rodgers, a man who
lives alone in a house that looks like it comes from the pages of a fairy tale
– until you see the disaster zone inside …
As Jenny gets to know Carver she begins to unravel the
sadness that has led to his chaotic existence. Gradually they realise they have
something in common that is impossible to ignore – and it all links back to a
meeting at a police station many years before.
Could the truth lie just beneath their feet?
The Truth Lies Buried is the second novel I have written for Choc Lit located in my fictional seaside town of Borteen. It is the second in the Borteen Secrets Series, but can be read as a stand-alone story. This book began its gestation many years ago in 2011 when I went to the Romantic Novelists’ Association conference as a day delegate. I went to see if I liked the people who belonged to the organisation and if I felt I fitted in before joining. The rest as they say is history. The day proved a pivotal point on my journey to publication and I joined the RNA’s New Writer’s Scheme in 2012. I am now a full member of the RNA after graduating from the scheme with my win in 2016 of Choc Lit Publishing’s Search for a Star competition with my debut novel The Girl on the Beach.
Anyway, back to the inspiration for The Truth Lies Buried. I attended one workshop at the conference mentioned above run by author Linda Gillard, whose work I greatly admire. She gave out photographs and postcards for us to use as a focus for a descriptive piece of prose. I chose a postcard depicting a wooden castle amongst trees. My hero in The Truth Lies Buried, Carver Rodgers lives at Tree Tops the house I described that day. The heroine of the book Jenny Simpson goes to meet Carver with a view to helping him with some cleaning. She is mesmerised by the wooden castle, little realising just what a mess lies inside Tree Tops. The couple quickly discover a past link between them and the complexities of this are revealed during the course of the book as they seek to uncover the secrets of the past.
